Do you have problems with your memory and cognitive function? Recent investigations into this everyday herb, Garlic, indicate it may be beneficial.

Garlic has health benefits in a range of health issues. I have successfully used it for my clients over many years. But recent investigations show it may have a role in improving ‘brain’ health and cognitive function.

Let’s start with traditional use of Garlic, it has an antibacterial action and helps alleviate symptoms of a cold & influenza, chronic sinus, chronic bronchitis and asthma. Garlic has been shown to help lower cholesterol & blood pressure, improve insulin resistance, all of which benefit cardiovascular health. It’s a preventative for cardiovascular disease including preventative for heart attacks. It is also a ‘detox’ herb by improving the gut flora, and modifying the liver’s phase II detox enzymes. It’s used to treat intestinal worms and gastrointestinal candidiasis.

Garlic’s role as an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory herbs contribute to its use as a ‘detox’ herb, by helping reduce the heavy metal burden.

Recent scientific investigation suggest that Garlic may also have a protective role for the brain and nervous system, and it may improve cognitive function.

Impaired cognitive function can include problems with memory, decision making, problem solving, learning, reasoning, and attention.

Garlic may improves cognitive skills by a number of different mechanisms. As an antioxidant reducing oxidative stress, improving the ‘energy production’ (it improves mitochondrial health) and as a ‘neuroprotector’ (protects the brain and nerves). The active constituent of Garlic is Allicin. Allicin has been investigated for it’s protection against inflammation of the brain (neuroinflammation).

When buying garlic the best form are Allicin-releasing Enteric-coated tablets. Ask your qualified herbalist which product is best. Always consult your health care practitioner before taking any herbal medicine, as it may not be right for you.

If you are on medication you MUST ask your qualified health practitioner if you can take Garlic, it contraindicated in anyone with a known allergy, and it must only be used cautiously if you are taking certain medication such as anticoagulant (anti-clotting) , anti platelets and saquinavir and it should be discontinued 2 weeks before surgery.
